Privacy Policy

Overview

Pastely is a macOS utility that transforms what you copied into the form the app you are pasting into needs. Doing that requires reading your clipboard and looking at your screen, so this page states plainly what leaves your Mac, what we keep, and for how long. If anything here is unclear, please ask before you install it.

What Pastely sends when you press the hotkey

Nothing happens until you press the transform hotkey. When you do, Pastely sends the following to our server, which passes it to OpenAI to produce the result:

• What you copied. The text or image on your clipboard.
• A screenshot of the window you are pasting into. This is how Pastely knows whether you are in a spreadsheet, a code editor, or a chat. It is taken at the moment you press the hotkey and captures whatever that window is showing, including any content already on screen.
• Where you are pasting.The app's name, the focused window's title, and the page URL if it is a browser.
• Anything you typed in the field you are pasting into. Pastely reads that box so it can follow an instruction you wrote there. It reads only the focused box, never the rest of the window.

We do not keep any of this on our servers, with one exception: the result itself, if you are on Pro and have left history sync on. That is covered below.

What we store

• Account. Your name, email address, and profile picture, received from Google when you sign in.
• Sessions. A session token and the name your device reports, so you can stay signed in and sign out.
• A record of each transform. The name of the app you pasted into, which model ran, whether the input was text or an image, whether it succeeded, how long it took, how many tokens it used, and when. This is how your usage is counted against your plan. It does not include what you copied or what came back.
• Synced history (Pro, optional). If you are on Pro and leave history sync on, the transformed result is stored on our servers so your history survives a lost Mac. It is encrypted at rest and deleted after 90 days. Turning sync off in Settings stops this immediately, and you can delete everything we hold from the same screen. Free accounts never sync.
• Subscription status. Whether you are on Free or Pro, kept in step with Polar.

What stays on your Mac

• Your transform history is stored on your Mac and is the copy Pastely reads from. It is unencrypted local app data, protected by your account and disk encryption like any other app's data.
• Your session token is kept in the macOS Keychain.
• Your settings, including your hotkeys, are kept in standard macOS preferences.

What we do not do

• We do not read your clipboard or look at your screen unless you press the hotkey. There is no background monitoring and no clipboard watching.
• We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising.
• We run no analytics, tracking scripts, or third-party pixels, on this site or in the app.
• We do not store what you copied. The only content we retain is the result, and only under the Pro sync described above.

Passwords and secrets

Password managers tag what you copy as secret. Pastely checks for that tag and refuses to read anything carrying it, whichever app you copied from. It also skips the screenshot entirely when your cursor is in a password field.

This has a real limit, and you should know it: the tag is the only reliable signal. A password you typed out yourself, or captured in a screenshot, carries no tag, and Pastely cannot tell it from ordinary text. If you transform it, it goes to OpenAI like anything else. Copy secrets from your password manager and they stay tagged.

Third-party services

• OpenAI receives everything listed in the section above, including the screenshot of your destination window, every time you transform. Their retention and usage terms apply to it. See openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.
• Google handles sign-in. We receive your name, email address, and profile picture. We never see your Google password.
• Polar handles subscription billing and stores your payment details. We never see your card. See polar.sh/legal/privacy.

macOS permissions

• Accessibility (required).Used to read the text in the field you are pasting into, to read the focused window's title and URL, and to press ⌘V for you so the result lands where you wanted it.
• Screen Recording (optional).Used to capture the single window you are pasting into. Pastely never records your screen continuously and never captures anything else. Decline it and Pastely still works, using only the app's name to decide what to do.

Neither permission is used passively. Both are exercised only in the moment you press the hotkey.

Encryption

Synced history is encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, so a copy of our database is not readable on its own. To be precise about what that does and does not mean: we hold the key, so we can decrypt it, and so could anyone who legally compels us. It is not end-to-end encrypted. If that matters to you, turn history sync off and your results never leave your Mac.

Data retention

• Synced history is deleted automatically after 90 days.
• Account details, sessions, transform records, and subscription status are kept while your account exists.
• Email us to delete your account and we will remove everything within 30 days. There is not yet a self-serve delete button in the app, so this is currently a manual request.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email the address below and we will action it within 30 days. You can delete your synced history yourself at any time in Settings, without emailing anyone.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page as the product changes, and update the date at the top when we do. If a change means Pastely starts collecting something new, we will say so plainly rather than quietly widen the wording.
