Markdown table generator

Select cells in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, copy, and paste them here. Spreadsheets copy cells as tab-separated text, which this reads straight away; CSV with commas or semicolons works too. The first row becomes the header. Copy the result as Markdown for GitHub, Notion or docs, or as HTML, CSV or JSON.

Markdown table syntax

| Left | Center | Right |
| :----- | :----: | ----: |
| a | b | c |

A colon on the left of the dashes aligns a column left, on both sides centres it, and on the right aligns it right. You need at least three dashes per column, and every row needs the same number of cells.

Markdown Table Generator: questions

How do I make a table in Markdown?+

Write each row on its own line with cells separated by pipes, and put a line of dashes under the header: | Name | Age |, then | --- | --- |, then | Ada | 36 |. The pipes don't have to line up, but this tool pads them so the table reads well as plain text too.

How do I convert Excel to a Markdown table?+

Select the cells in Excel, press Command-C (or Ctrl-C), and paste them into the box above. Excel copies cells as tab-separated text, and the generator turns each tab into a column.

Can a Markdown table cell contain a pipe or a line break?+

A pipe has to be escaped as \|, and a line break written as <br>. The generator does both for you.

Where do Markdown tables work?+

GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, Discord (on desktop), Reddit, Jira and most documentation tools. They're part of GitHub Flavored Markdown, not the original Markdown, so a few older editors don't show them.
