Word Counter: questions

How are words counted?+

A word is a run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words and contractions like well-known and it's count as one word, the same way Word and Google Docs count them. Punctuation and emoji on their own aren't words.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?+

About 4 minutes. Adults read English silently at around 238 words a minute (Brysbaert, 2019). Spoken aloud, at a presentation pace of about 140 words a minute, 1,000 words takes around 7 minutes.

Do spaces count as characters?+

Usually, yes. Most limits, including X, SMS and meta descriptions, count spaces. Some essay and form limits don't, so the counter shows both.

How many words is a page?+

About 500 words single-spaced, or 250 double-spaced, in a 12-point font with normal margins.
